Pompei by night? Why not.

Word arrived via text message that the spare parts for the van finally arrived in Trun, Switzerland. The good news is that we’ll be ready to roll, the less good news is that 30cm of snow fell and the van doesn’t have snow tires. So what do we do? Head further away from the van of course, take a train to Naples and and another train to the historic site of Pompei. .

Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

To our good fortune, the gates remained open until 730pm so we stuck around and explored the streets under moonlight in the shadow of the volcano that tragically buried many of Pompei’s inhabitants before they could escape.
